EXPERTS from BBC1's Antiques Road Trip programme have been busy unearthing bargains in Cumbria over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Yesterday,  Philip Serrell called in at the Vintage at Maysons shop in Keswick to film part of an episode for the popular television programme's next series.

The TV presenter and auctioneer paid a total of £50 to buy an item each from Julie Jordan and Karin Gibson, who run the vintage and collectibles business in Lake Road.

Philip said: "It's a lovely shop to come to and Karin and Julie have made us extremely welcome. They were both very kind to me, selling me two excellent items which I think will do really well at auction."

Like Philip, neither Julie nor Karin would reveal what he had bought ahead of the items being auctioned in Kendal early in September when he will be hoping to make a profit on them.

Karin said: "He picked out a few items that he really liked and we gave him a good deal. I think he was pleased with what he bought. A few customers were a bit bemused by what was going on initially, with the TV cameras, but lots of them recognised Phil."

Phil is competing in this episode against fellow Antiques Road Trip expert Christina Trevanion, who travelled to Cockermouth with him later in the day, having been in Carlisle on Saturday. Each has a fixed budget and the one who makes the most profit at auction on the price they paid to buy their items is the winner.

The episode featuring their Bank Holiday trip to Cumbria will be broadcast on BBC1 early in the new year.
