AN ARTIST hopes to create a studio at the closed-down public loo on Grange-over-Sands prom.

North East seascape painter James Youngson - also known as Papion the artist - wants to paint from the former public conveniences at The Promenade, according to plans before South Lakeland District Council.

“My family and I are regular visitors to Grange and I am often inspired by the beauty and tranquillity of the area,” Mr Youngston told the Gazette.

“It was on a recent visit that I noticed the property going up for auction and felt it would make a perfect studio to paint from at weekends, given the beautiful view and quiet location. The studio will be very sympathetically restored to keep in character with the local area. Subject to planning, work will begin on the building over the winter to be ready for spring next year.”

In a letter to planners, building consultant Jack Walsh described Papion as ‘one of the most sought-after artists in the UK’.

He stated that his client would use the converted toilet block to paint, not to sell his artworks.

According to his website, Papion began sketching as a child and has had 60 exhibitions in his 30-year career.

Kirkby Lonsdale contemporary art gallery The Loovre is also housed in a refurbished public loo, on the town’s Jingling Lane.
