MILNTHORPE and District Allotment Association held its 73rd Annual Horticultural and Craft Show on Saturday at St Thomas’ Church.

A warm and sunny afternoon attracted a large number of visitors and kept the show café busy throughout the afternoon serving tea and homemade cakes.

Although there was a decrease in the children’s classes, visitors enjoyed an excellent display of vegetables, fruit, flowers, baking and crafts.

The award for the best horticultural exhibit in the show was won by Andrew Western for three leeks.

Other trophies were awarded as follows: Bill Stables for gaining the most points in vegetable classes, onions and shallots; Bill Gott for potatoes; Jack Gott for dahlias and chrysanthemums; Ronnie Holmes for onions and Michael Walsh for leeks.

Dave Woodhouse won awards for dahlias and gaining most points in the flower sections; Kevin Briggs wonawards for sweet peas and dahlias; Ian and Sheila Smith the award for best fuchsia exhibit; Ted Balmer won awards for the best gladioli.

Colin and Christine Honour won an award for a foliage plant; Cody Smith an award for a hanging basket and floral art and Heather Harley the trophy for gaining most points in the floral art categories.

Kathleen Dawson gained most points in the domestic classes and Muriel Coom the trophy for the best exhibit in the domestic class (blackberry and apple pie).

Jean Hall won the photographic trophy.

In the children’s classes, George Kinnear, Shania Crayston and Evelyn Taylor won awards for gaining the most points in their respective age groups; Ruby Crayston won the award for the best miniature garden and Alice Cushnie for the best handwriting.

Evelyn Taylor won the trophy for the best vegetable animal and Shania Crayston for the best seed and berry necklace; Annabell Tyson won the trophy for six small cakes and Shania Crayston the Children’s Centre Cup.

The trophy for the best exhibit in the wine section was won by Katy Gott and the Steve Hurst Trophy for the tallest sunflower by Amber Mason with a 13 footer.
