A STUDENT who was seen by police swerving in the roads without any lights on succumbed to peer pressure to drive his friends home after he had been drinking, a court heard.

Thomas Miller, of Hammer Vale, Haslemere in Surrey, was banned from the roads for 20 months at South Lakeland Magistrates Court after admitting the offence of drink driving on Glebe Road, Bowness, around 8pm on September 2.

The court heard the 21-year-old had initially agreed to give a lift to friends who were going out in the town for the evening.

But he was persuaded to drink alcohol by the group said Chris Evans, mitigating.

"He had been intending to just give a lift but was persuaded to drink and succumbed to peer pressure," said Mr Evans.

"The group encouraged him to drive and he knows the consequences could have been catastrophic. There is no other excuse."

Miller, who is on a post graduate course in Birmingham, was found to have 75mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of £130, £85 in costs and a victim surcharge of £20.
