SOUTH Lakeland picked up two awards at the Royal British Legion (RBL) Cumberland & Westmorland County’s Annual County Conference in Penrith.

The charity’s Kendal branch was awarded the Major J W Smith Poppy Day Rose Bowl for increase in poppy appeal for a large branch.

Kendal has increased its poppy appeal fundraising by 26 per cent over the past three years, with a total of £26,021 for 2013-2014, compared to £20,639 in 2011-2012.

The Lonsdale Youth Trophy for County Youth Endeavour went to 1264 (Windermere) Squadron ATC.

The cadets decided they wanted to clean their local war memorial and are now affiliated with Windermere’s RBL branch.

In total seven awards were handed out at the ceremony by Lord Lieutenant Claire Hensman.
