A SINGING group for people who are living with dementia across South Lakeland has been launched by Alzheimer’s Society staff in the Grange-over-Sands area.

The new Singing for the Brain initiative in Allithwaite will promote communication through singing which can help with articulation, concentration, focus and motivation and is aimed at people with dementia and their loved ones or carers.

It is due to get under way as a result of fundraising by members of the Grange Soroptimists International. One of the events held was an Edwardian Music Hall at the Victoria Music Hall in Grange.

Justine McCoy, Kendal-based Alzheimer’s Society services manager, said: "Even when many memories are hard to retrieve, music can sometimes still be recalled - if only for a short while."

A successful pilot scheme ran for 10 weeks in Grange at the end of 2014. The next block of 10 weeks will start on Thursday January 22 at Allithwaite Community Centre.
