DRIVING rain and wind failed to dampen the spirits of residents and visitors attending the inaugural Grasmere Welcomes Christmas event.

The traditional celebration on Saturday and Sunday saw people served with festive treats including roast chestnuts and mulled wine.

Entertainment was provided by a brass band, Grasmere Glee Club and storytelling from Taffy Thomas's garden.

Santa was in his grotto on Stock Lane during the day, joined by local children dressed as elves, and local businesses stayed open for late night shopping.

Visitors were encouraged to vote for the most welcoming business, with a silver trophy due to be presented to the winner next week.

Children's activities over the two days included treasure trails, pomander making, and face painting.

Vivienne Rees, one of the organisers said: “It was the most appalling weather you can imagine but everybody was so upbeat about it, which I thought was wonderful.

“We didn’t have as many people as we would have liked but those who were there really seemed to enjoy themselves.

“We’re hoping this will become an annual event and the response was very encouraging.”
