A £472,000 Highways England project to give drivers smoother journeys along the M6 around Carlisle will be delivered in July.

Overnight work between Monday 4 and Sunday July 17 involves resurfacing lane one of the southbound carriageway around junction 44 and also carrying out drainage repairs.

Highways England project manager Peter Gee said: “This work will iron out any surface issues such as rutting from HGVs where tracks are worn into the road surface which is often an issue in lane one. As well as repairing the drainage we’ll also be refreshing road markings and putting in new reflective road studs.”

All of the work will be done between 8pm and 6am each night using hard shoulder, lane 1 and lane 2 closures. Lane 1 will continue to be closed during the day and a 50mph speed limit will also operate around the clock past the short section of road works.

The southbound entry slip road at junction 44 will also be closed for 1 or 2 nights with drivers asked to use the northbound M6 to join the southbound carriageway from the roundabout at junction 45.
