ULVERSTON residents laced up their skates to celebrate the handing over of the town's hall

A Roller Disco formed part of the Coro All festival - five days of activities that marked Ulverston Community Enterprises (UCE) taking over the running of Coronation Hall.

Audiences were also able to see the town’s best teenage talent in a ‘One Night Only’ concert based on Broadway classics and see local bands perform in ‘Ulverston Rocks’.

A ‘Geek Fest’ drew together lovers of sci-fi and fantasy characters, and there were also workshops for singing, drumming, yoga and a jive dance session, with local history exhibitions and puppet shows helping to complete the line-up.

UCE's chief executive Charlie Rowley said: "Our aim was to provide something for everyone and attract people who had not visited the hall in a while, or perhaps never been to a show or event there.

"We saw lots of new people and the feedback provides a foundation for planning other attractions in the future."

One of the big surprises was the success of the bingo session which started the festival and there are already plans for more game nights in the future.

UCE has worked closely with South Lakeland District Council for a year on the change in running the hall and markets.

UCE's board chair Judith Pickthall said: “We want to retain the hall for another 100 years as the hub of the community and we have big plans to return it to profitability and raise extra funds.

“We believe UCE as a not-for-profit organisation can do a better job of running them and secure the future of the Coronation Hall and the town’s markets. But it is also a huge undertaking for the board of volunteers which will be running a big business and handling budgets involving hundreds of thousands of pounds. So we are hoping the whole of Ulverston will get behind the initiative to help make it a success.”
