A TRANSIT van with a quad bike inside crashed in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) near the Dent Head Viaduct.

Cumbria Police have confirmed that emergency services, including police two fire engines from Hawes and Kirkby Lonsdale, were called to the scene at around 4am, and found that the van had left the road and was lying on its side.

It is thought the van - carrying a suspected stolen quad bike - had been travelling from the North Yorkshire area, and North Yorkshire Police alerted Cumbria Police in case the vehicle travelled into the county.

Witnesses reported seeing around 30 emergency personnel, including armed police and a dog unit.

Police said the van contained two men, one of whom had become trapped in the driver's seat by the quad bike and had to be rescued. He was arrested and treated by an ambulance crew.

The other man is still unaccounted for.
