AN innovative South Lakes business has been recognised for its approach to agriculture.

The Horned Beef Company Ltd, which is run by husband and wife team David and Bekka Corrie-Close near Grange, has been shortlisted for the British Farming Awards 2017.

The British Farming Awards category, 'Against the Odds', celebrates the achievements of those farmers doing something different in agriculture.

David and Bekka are not from a farming background. Their passion for improving nature in the great British countryside, led them into a career in agriculture.

The Horned Beef Company’s herd of native cattle and 'farming with nature ethos, is attracting a lot of attention from the public and the media.

BBC Countryfile filmed the young couple earlier this month. Adam Henson was keen to tell the story of how David and Bekka currently operate their business without a traditional farmstead.

Bekka said: "We hope that telling our story will inspire others to follow, no matter how challenging."

David added: "It’s important that we reach out to new customers to buy our beef. It’s about more than that though. We need the public to support what we, and others, are doing to promote positive changes in farming."

Founded in 2015, The Horned Beef Company are based in Lindale. The farm holding expands to over 1000 acres.

Landlords include the National Trust, RSPB and Cumbria Wildlife Trust, as well as private land owners.

The Countryfile Episode will broadcast on October 1, featuring David and Bekka looking after animals in 'farming's forgotten places'.

The British Farming Awards ceremony will take place on October 19 at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham. David and Bekka’s business, The Horned Beef Company, is one of five finalists for the award.

The BBC will cover the awards in a programme to be shown in January 2018.
