MAIL ORDER suppliers to the hotel and hospitality industry Kirkby Stephen-based Out of Eden have joined forces with local students to set up a recycling project in the town.
RECYCLING on the road
Kirkby Stephen Grammar School Sports College's Student's Council was keen to get involved in recycling cardboard used not only in the classrooms but also in the school kitchens.
With sponsorship from Eden District Council and Out of Eden, the local partnership between the school and the business has resulted in the purchase of a trailer, which students have converted into a mobile recycling point.
Janet Hartley, of Out of Eden, said: "The school bought a trailer and started to flat pack any boxes they used and included the caterers, who joined the scheme.
"After some renovation and signage the trailer is now collected weekly by ourselves, and the cardboard is shredded by a specialist machine which produces the void fill and saves the use of unfriendly plastic packaging, while re-using a waste product at the same time.
"We are delighted at the school's response and the way the project has taken off and is looking for other uses for the void fill, as more is produced. The great thing about the scheme is that it is done locally, without waste having to be transported many miles, saving resources."
This is one of a number of re-cycling schemes the school is working on, including paper, plastic, cans and glass projects.
