Council tax increase could be offered to fund more Lancashire gritting

IN ACTION: A gritter on the streets

RESIDENTS in Lancashire could be given the option of a council tax increase in return for more gritting on the county’s roads.

Our Grit Watch feature has been inundated with complaints about roads that have been left untreated during the recent cold snap.

This is despite stocks being upped by 35 per cent, bring the total cost to £5million for Lancashire County Council alone.

But county hall officials have said that if people were willing to accept the extra cost then they would be prepared to carry out a review into increasing the gritting network in the future.

Tim Ashton, the county’s gritting chief, said: “We carry out a review after every winter and if the winters continue like this then we may have to consider the option of putting more money towards gritting.

“But we have to put things into perspective and wait until the dust has settled and take a balanced view in the new year because at the moment it is very subjective because people are suffering.

“We will make some recommendations next year and if there is a popular consensus to increase taxes to pay for extra gritting then of course it will be considered.”

Last year’s winter gritting service was strongly criticised.

So far, a team of 49 gritters have spread 14,000 tons of salt across the county leaving 16,000 tons in the reserves.

Coun Ashton, member for highways and transport, added: “There is still some snow lying on the roads even though they have been treated and it is because of the low temperatures that we have been experiencing which makes the salt less effective.

“I would urge people to take extra care when driving and avoid unnecessary journeys which will lead to less congestion on the roads.”

What are the figures? Is an extra fiver or tenner on your council tax bill really too much? Is that not worth being able to get to work on time? A tenner is less than two hour's pay on minimum wage -which in most cases will probably pay for itself easily if it means you're not late for work.

Its easy to say that councils should provide enough salt but surely they have to draw the line somewhere because of cost. They started with stock 35% more than last year and that seems reasonable to me. Perhaps they should have 200%, 500% or more but the simple fact is that costs money and needs to be paid for. As happycyclist says, for a few extra quid from everyone we can get the job sorted! No doubt if next winter huge supplies are stockpiled and it does not snow the council will be blamed for wasting money!

How we react to this begging tactic will indeed set a precedent for the future begging by the state. I want a full breakdown and paper trail as to how every penny of my council tax and tax in general is spent. it is obvious the state as it is is a failed state, but it is not the Constitutional state that has failed, it is the corporate state that has failed.

The answer to this must not be the same as that made on our behalf by a corporate puppet government, the New Labour fascism, by the New Coalition fascism, and get the taxpayer to bailout their failure, it has not brought that which was promised.

We lent the banks credit to then not lend to us at interest, that is a failure of tremendous proportions, let us not go there again.

What we need is an end to the failed corporate government and crown and we set things back as they were when our tax remained in the economy instead of being sucked out by the corporate subcontractor-provid
ers...they are not providing they are removing services...not fit for purpose.

We re-nationalise the basic services this nation uses, gas, electric, rail, telecoms, water, food production, given our farmers, (Masonic farmers) are sat on their backsides while taking massive subsidies from Europe to not farm. The supermarket grows

Let us look at the times when the nation did work, and take from that the basic structure then re-implement such, not under Acts of Parliament, but as a nation to be formed as part of our new constitution.

I would take this opportunity to wish a Merry Christmas to all who post on this forum, whatever your thoughts of the information I bring, as I give the same sentiments to all the staff at the LT for putting up with the same, well done to you, but.....

Next year is not going to be happy if the current state of play continues, so I will offer not this sentiment, I will state the following :

For a happy new year in 2012, then we as a nation of Englishmen, Scottish men, Irishmen and Welshmen, must do some serious thinking over this season with the shift to act in the proper manner during 2011 to demand the elected representatives we pay for and give our trust, had better begin to remember what this country is all about and what office they hold, they are not placed in our Parliament to Kow Tow to corporate demands, they are there to administer the tax retinue we give to make the country work, period. We are paying our constitutional system to act under its mandate, it is the job of the civil servants to then ensure the constitution is upheld and stop any such deviation in this regard.
.
We need each other, the civil servants require our energy to then uphold the constitution, we need our system to give us that very conclusion.
.
It takes a will to change what is, it takes courage to implement that will, I hold both, what exactly do you hold?

Great Britain is a great nation, the United Kingdom is a failure, let us set to removing the United kingdom, and mean it....

Rather than chipping in an getting the roads safe, some would rather sit and examine endless paper trails hoping to find something that makes them feel a little bit more superior. Children are starving in the third world because of the rise of the supermarkets.

During the 1970's there were the African famines which if you are of the age will remember, were made so as the corporations moved people off the land and herded into camps in order the land could grow for the supermarkets agenda.

In so doing we now have the situation whereby farmers here are subsidised not to grow. Under such a scenario we are at the mercy of global financial considerations as to how much our food is to cost, this will have more of a bite when in January VAT moves to 20%, and the continued devaluation of our currency
.
If we addressed these issues then people would not starve in the third world, and remove the need for overseas aid...win win everybody, save for the fascist corporations, and we can afford grit again .
.
Picture the knock on effects of this train of thought and action.

a BIG NO INCREASE VOTE from me. No matter how small an annual inflation rate is the LCC always seem to quadruple the percentage rise for each annual Council Tax demand. From their costly colourful newspaper it can be seen they like to spend money on presentations to pat themselves on the back just for doing a well paid job! And after hearing stories told by farmers with snowploughs about delays in paperwork preventing their clearing the roads I think LCC should be fined or give us a refund!

Get your priorities right and marshal resources accordingly. We pay for gritting already, do it right, the councils did this in the 70's & 80's and even managed to do the side roads in equivalent conditions. Get your act together!!!!
If you want to get more money stop councilors allowances and pension payments

Just who is kidding who here. It used to be that if you were behind a gritter or passing one you got grit fired at your car. Noe by some miracle the gritt does not even hit your car. I think this is because very little grit is being spread by the gritters. We are being fooled yet again. How dare they suggest a surcharge for extra gitting in future. No chance of a yes from me. I still don't know why until recently my council tax has increased year in year out whilst council services have dimninished just as fast. Please stop treating us like idiots and get on with the job of clearing our roads. Able boddied people should be obliged to clear the snow in front of their own property. This may encourage them to help each other

We give money to underdeveloped countries to help their poor people, I've no problem with this.
Unfortunately the aid money too often gets sidetracked by 'advisers', often from the donor country. This money often ends up by enriching big companies in rich countries who throw the money at unwanted projects which do nothing to help the indigenous population. Anything left over is used to increase the bank accounts of corrupt politicians who couldn't care less about the people they are supposed to represent.

That's got to be the most mental thing I've ever read on here. Taking into account some of the head-the-balls sometimes seen on here, that takes some Olympic standard head-the-ball-ness so you must feel so proud that you've excelled yourself in such company. Such fun.

The problem is not the cost of the salt and grit, that's cheap. Its the very expensive speading wagons and gritters that have to be purchased and then stored somewhere (safe) for 10 or 11 months a year while waiting for the 4 or 5 weeks a year they are needed. There is also the problem that salt and grit only works down to -5%, and the temperature has been a lot lower than that. Snow Blowers and ploughs are also very expensive bits of kit and whilst fantastic at shifting the stuff, do need clear roads to work on, not ones full of parked and abandoned cars like the streets around here have been with the recent snow and ice.

Perhaps the problem needs a more radical solution, like making car manufacturers provide snow chains as part of standard equipment on all new cars, then the Councils can concentrate on their core functions of education and social care, and use the money they would save from not buying all these big boys toys to keep my council tax down?

Statutes work for the corporations common law protects the people and constitutional state, the former built this nation the latter has destroyed it.

The arrogance of the armchair critic! No we are not all in agreement. This thread is supposed to be about paying more to grit the roads in extreme weather, not spouting of cliched and naive rubbish picked up from wathcing too much gmtv.

Let me give an analogy that maybe you will understand-
You do your weekly shop but during the week you have guests and the food disappears quicker than you expected. If you go back to the supermarket should they give you more food for free?

This possibly explains why your posts are full of oft-quoted, cliched teachings and how your accusations bear no resemblance to reality (who mentioned encyclopeadia britannica, not me!). I think you have been that busy copying statements from others you are getting confused as to who belongs where! You don't actually know what you think do you, are you saying Encyclopeadia Brittanica is good or bad because you are now making absolutley no sense whatsoever! i don't even know why you mentioned it in the first place as its seems that most of your information comes from wikipedia!

it is hard to engage people who cannot engage, what you term sulky is actually me trying to get you to engage with debate, you seem not to want to debate just throw insult.
propaganda is the script written by a side to excite the people into supporting their moves, you seem to be protecting a side, are you prepared to share what it is you are protecting which prevents you from debating, I use the term protect rather than support because you offer nothing but personal attacks.

I was not aware that ole' lifeinthemagimix has a website so I've just had a look. OMG what a load of tosh! Reading the bio it would appear that every failure is somebody elses fault and i would imagine there has been quite a bit of relying on the state (the swines) to provide an income!
