TV ad campaign to boost Lakes tourism

A TV advertising campaign has been launched to help boost tourism in the Lake District following this winters floods and freezing weather.

Hoping to capitalise on the popularity of The Lakes series currently running on ITV, the Lakes Hospitality Association has joined forces with Windermere Lakes Cruises and other hotels and guesthouses to fund the campaign.

Adverts will be shown around The Lakes programme, as well as other popular shows such as This Morning, Emmerdale and the News.

A special website www.lakewindermere.tv has also been set up.

The TV campaign will be shown in the Yorkshire and Tyne Tees area, where a large proportion of Lake District business comes from. With the dedicated website the Lakes Hospitality Association will be able to closely monitor where enquiries are coming from Jonathan Denby, chairman of the Lakes Hospitality Association said: “The double-whammy of floods and snow cut the number of visitors to the Lakes by half. We need to show the world that the Lakes is fully open for business.

“At the time of the floods I asked the North West Development Agency for funding for a TV campaign to match the money given to Yorkshire Tourism of £30 million over three years. The NWDA were not sure of the efficacy of TV advertising, so we intend to demonstrate to them with our TV campaign - that TV advertising is just what the Lakes needs to bring back the tourists.”
