A CANOE enthusiast has built his own cedar strip canoe and plans to launch the boat – and with it a new business – this year.
Richard Wells, of Ambleside, crafted the 16-foot chestnut ‘prospector’ canoe while doing his outdoor studies course at the University of Cumbria Ambleside campus.
Now the 22-year-old plans to start a business building the high-end Canadian-style canoes when his course finishes in May.
“I’ve made craft items for a while but I have a background in building work and I do a lot of canoeing, so an enterprise that com-bines the two would be great,” he said.
“You get lots of plastic canoes in Britain but few made from wood and fibre glass, so I’m hoping this could spark interest from real boat connoisseurs.”
