12:10pm Tuesday 27th January 2009 in Digital UK By Lizzie Anderson
THOUSANDS of homes across Cumbria are just six months away from making the switch to digital TV.
On June 24, Border Television viewers who receive their TV signal from the Caldbeck transmitter will enter stage one of the switchover process, with Granda Television customers following suite on November 4.
With the big day approaching Digital UK –the independent none-profit organisation leading the process- is urging people not to leave it to0 late before seeking advice and buying equipment.
“Most people in Cumbria already have a choice of ways to get digital TV, and after switchover almost everyone will be able to get it through an aerial,” said John Askew, Digital UK Border regional manager. “There will be plenty of assistance for those who need it, including the Switchover Help Scheme and charity partnerships formed by Digital UK.”
Mr Askew has also issued the following handy hints to help people make the switch: · Virtually all TV sets can be converted with a digital box so there is no need to buy a new one.
· If you are buying a new TV set or recording equipment look out for the digital tick logo, which identifies products that will work before, during and after the switchover.
· You probably do not need to buy a new aerial if your current one is in good condition and provides a good analogue picture.
· Never buy equipment from someone who calls at your door. Get advice from a reputable local television retailer or aerial installer.
· Remember all TV sets within a household need converting and if you want to record one channel while watching another you will need a digital TV recorder.
· Satellite TV, cable and radio are not affected by the digital switchover.
· If you are aged 75 or over, have lived in a care home for six months or more, receive certain disability benefits or are registered blind or partially sighted you are eligible for the Switchover Help Scheme and will receive a letter and information pack.
