Members of a South Lakeland Women's Institute group have swapped Jam and Jerusalem for bin bags and wellies in a community-spirited move to ease the Lake District's litter woes.

This week, inspired by The Westmorland Gazette's Blitz Lakeland's Litter Campaign, members of Kendal Castle WI group armed themselves with litterpickers and plastic bags to strike a blow for a litter free future for the area.

As part of the campaign, dozens of readers from all over the country have written in to the Gazette, nominating the litter-strewn places that they want to see named and shamed and then tackled by landowners and local authorities.

And after members of the WI group decided they wanted to back our campaign, a group took action on a stretch of verge alongside Kendal bypass at Sizergh on Wednesday (February 14).
