LITTER-strewn streets have been given an extra sparkle by a group of Kendal town councillors.

After being inspired by The Westmorland Gazette's, Blitz Lakeland's Litter campaign, the group started work clearing the town's streets, gathering dozens of bags of rubbish in the process.

Deputy mayor Gwen Murfin said that she was astonished by the amount of rubbish that the councillors managed to gather during the day-long clean up of the town.

She said she hoped the event would become a popular highlight in the town's calendar.

"It was actually quite good fun because you get to meet people and talk to them while you are taking part," she explained.
