2:20pm Friday 1st August 2008 in Save Post Offices
By Allan Tunningley
A KENDAL businessman has decided to start selling stamps after the post office on the same street as his shop has closed.
Nigel Byrom has started selling postal stamps in his furniture shop, in Wildman Street, following the closure of Longpool Post Office by postal chiefs.
Mr Byrom said that while he could only sell stamps he was doing it to retain some sort of postal service for that part of Kendal and not profiteering.
“You make about five per cent out of them, but that is not the point,” he said. “An awful lot of people come down this end of town and we have got a letterbox outside, so as a long-established family business we thought it was the right thing to do for the area.
“Why should people lose out just because it (Longpool) is shut?”
