Offset bid for greener off-roaders

OFF-ROAD vehicles have come under fire for their less than environmentally-friendly credentials.

But a Kendal-based dealership is set to change that by offsetting the carbon emissions it produces throughout 2008.

Kentdale Land Rover, on Shap Road, made the announcement following the success of the marque's Our Planet initiative that looks at ways of reducing its impact on the environment.

Colin Shepherd, dealer principal at Kentdale Land Rover, said he believed it was an important move for a local company.

"As a local business we wanted to make a clear statement that we support what Land Rover is trying to achieve and that any business can take positive steps to reduce its impact on the environment."

Land Rover, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in April, has taken leaps forward in its efforts to cut vehicle emissions with a long-term commitment to implement new technologies.

It also operates the world's biggest consumer carbon offset programme of its type, covering emissions generated by its manufacturing plants and the first 45,000 miles of customer use in the UK.
