MORE than 500 drivers in south Cumbria were handed fixed penalty notices last year for not wearing a seatbelt in their vehicle, according to police figures released this week.

In addition, 28 adult passengers and five children were found travelling as front seat passengers without seatbelts, while 28 adults and ten children were caught failing to belt up in the back seats, Cumbria police revealed.

The statistics showed that last year a total of 529 drivers in south Cumbria broke the seatbelt law, which first came into force in 1983.

The figures were released as officers across Cumbria urged drivers and passengers to 'belt up' to mark 25 years of seatbelt use being compulsory in Britain, and 15 years in Europe.

A week-long campaign, which began on Monday, has thrown the spotlight on the law surrounding the use of seatbelts and the dangers of not wearing them. Police said they would adopt a zero-tolerance approach to people caught without their seatbelts.
