ONE SMALL step for man and one giant jump for the 210 pupils who are preparing to take part in a nationwide world record attempt.
The experiment by students at Plumstead Manor School, in Old Mill Road, is part of the build-up to National Science Year, which starts in September.
The Plumstead pupils were rehearsing for a world record attempt for the most people jumping at the same time.
The record has never been attempted before. The shuddering caused by the pupils in an effort to cause a man-made rumble was measured with seismic equipment normally used to monitor earthquakes.
Science Year 2001 is being launched in an effort to raise awareness of science up and down the country. Pupils at schools across the borough will be asked to come up with scientific ideas to boost learning in the subject.
