A CRAVEN primary school is celebrating all-round success as the head teacher prepares to retire after 14 years service.

Some years ago Bentham Community Primary School was said to "require improvement" following a critical Ofsted report. But the staff rallied and tackled problems head-on and an assistant head teacher was appointed.

The school has since moved into a brand new state-of-the-art building and has now received a 'good' Ofsted recommendation with 'outstanding' early year’s provision.

Another change for the school is still ahead as the assistant head teacher Claire Pearson has been appointed as head teacher. She will take over the reins following the retirement of long-serving head Catherine Boocock at Easter.

Claire Procter, co-chair of governors at Bentham Community Primary School, said: "Mrs Boocock has been absolutely central in getting us where we are now.

"We are proud of what we have achieved and are looking forward to more excellent things to come."

Mrs Boocock said: "I have had a lovely time working at Bentham Primary. I am very lucky and have been very happy but it's time to move on. I want more time with my family and friends."

The school has just had academic success in Year 6 assessments, with results well above the national average. The results put the school at the top of the table when compared with other primary schools in North Craven and when compared to schools over the border in Lancashire.

Seventy-three per cent of pupils at Bentham achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, compared to 53 per cent nationally.

The school has also received a £10,000 grant from The Big Lottery fund which will be used to develop outside areas.

Plans are in place to plant a food garden, a project involving both children and parents. It will teach the pupils practical skills both in classroom and at the after-school club.

Assistant head teacher Miss Pearson said: "The dedication of the teachers and staff here has made the school so successful. The teachers and pupils have gone from strength to strength and we are hoping to have just as successful a year next year."
