Arnside and Silverside

Arnside/Silverdale WALKING, wildlife and history are all synonymous with these two scenic villages on the sandy shores of Morecambe Bay.

With spectacular views from the low banks of the Kent Estuary, visitors can enjoy a stroll along the promenade while watching out for the famous tidal bore rushing in across the beach faster than a man can run.

The former fishing village of Arnside is renowned for a cluster of pretty shops adorning the seafront and the railway viaduct which traverses the Bay.

Further south, in Lancashire, Silverdale offers a similar tranquil village environment. Sharing the same Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the limestone geology and costal surrounds offer natural ancient woodlands, grasslands and salt marshes supporting a variety of rare birds and butterflies to interest all types of visitors.

Main Attractions: L The RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss offers hours of entertainment and intrigue watching birds in their natural habitat.

L Visit the limestone pavements in Beetham woods.

L Sample the local hospitality in one of the friendly seafront pubs with spectacular views across the Bay and to the Lake District peaks.

L Take part in one of the cross bay walks led by the Queen's Guide to the Sands Cedric Robinson.

And if it's wet: Take a short trip to the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, near Milnthorpe, or spend time visiting the local shops and cafes to sample what the villages have to offer.

Walks: Long - Arnside to Silverdale. Take the four-mile route between the two villages leaving from the promenade at Arnside following the winding roads and signed public footpaths along the way.

Short - Stroll along the beach from Arnside following the coastline for as far as you feel comfortable and retrace your steps back along the shore. Remember to be aware of the incoming tide.
