HAWKSHEAD is the quintessential Lakeland village, nestling beneath majestic mountains, and a mere stone's throw from the shores of a tranquil lake.
Take a stroll through ancient alleyways and courtyards lined with whitewashed cottages, and you can see why Wordsworth waxed lyrical about the village where he went to school.
Set in the peaceful Vale of Esthwaite, Hawkshead attracts thousands of visitors every year but it is still a must on any Lake District itinerary, even for those seeking sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of life.
A prosperous medieval wool town, its rich history includes important connections with the poet William Wordsworth and children's story writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter and each have museums devoted to them within the village.
One of its most attractive charms of Hawkshead is the fact that the village centre is pedestrianised. The absence of traffic enhances its character and makes wandering around its narrow, winding streets especially rewarding.
The surrounding countryside provides a full range of fell-walking experiences, from gentle strolls to rugged hill climbing.
There is also some fine fishing just down the road on the picturesque Esthwaite Water.
For those who like to shop, Hawkshead offers outdoor wear, plenty of gifts and some excellent pubs and cafes.
Anyone passing through in the summer is also guaranteed a fantastic floral display - the gardening skills of villagers scooped a silver medal in the annual Britain in Bloom competition in 2004.
Main attractions...
The Beatrix Potter Gallery in the centre of the village is owned by the National Trust, and has displays of her work, original drawings and information about her life as author, artist, farmer and conservation pioneer.
Explore the picturesque 15th century parish church of St Michael, which boasts wall frescoes and offers a great view of the village's twin central squares.
L Visit the grammar school which William Wordsworth attended and see his name carved on an old desk. The school dates back to 1585 and is open to the public.

Technology can be a wonderful thing. It allows you to communicate across vast distances, speak to friends all over the globe, watch strangers crossing the street in Times Square, download the latest songs and movies ... and all through a tiddly piece of wire plugged into a hole above the skirting board.
GARDENING WITH DIRTY NAILS: SEPTEMBER, 1ST WEEK WINTER ONIONS September is the month to plant winter onion sets, widely available and alternatively known as ‘autumn onions’. The ’Radar’ variety gives consistently good returns, toughing out the harshest winter, swelling up in spring and ripening for harvest in late May. They do not store for very long, unlike maincrops, but are a valuable early crop.
