Sample the scenery and history of Maryport

THIS route follows spectacular coastal scenery from sea level to the soaring cliff top. Seabirds and flowers are everywhere in the warmer months while a winter walk can be equally fascinating. Streets of old cottages lead up to the cliffs. These highpoints provided watch towers for the Celts during the Iron Ages and later the Romans had a substantial port on the headlands. This is certainly a town not to be rushed.

ENNERDALE is a quiet remote dale, enjoyed by all who are looking for a tranquil part of the Lake District and who like to have the lovely countryside almost entirely to themselves. It is a long valley, gouged out by a glacier during the Ice Age. The head of the valley is composed of granophyre, a hard volcanic rock; the foot is of friable Skiddaw Slates, which allowed the glacier to splay out, widening the lower end of the lake, which is where this limited mobility walk takes you.
A steady ascent to Bannerdale Crags

In my early days as a fell walker reading about Bannerdale Crags seemed to make them sound formidable and that I needed more experience before tackling them. Eventually I did and have done so many times since and wondered what put me off.
Glorious views from the craggy heights of Place Fell

THIS walk climbs Place Fell, the craggy, hummocky steep-sided height that dominates the south-eastern end of Ullswater. A gentle saunter follows, along the airy top to the sheepfold on Low Moss. A descent below Sleet fell leads to Boredale and to Sandwick, here to return along the glorious spectacular path on the east side of the lake.
Have a scenic stroll around Buttermere

DESPITE the fact that Buttermere is on the tourist trail it is still only a hamlet and too few visitors take the trouble to walk all around it despite the terrain being flat. From the A66 Buttermere is reached from Newlands or from Whinlatter Pass and Lorton via the B5292 and the B5289.
