Poet Michael Symmons Roberts and musician Alan Franks guest at Poem and a Pint

A POEM and A Pint holds it first session of 2010 at Ulverston’s Lanternhouse with guest poet Michael Symmons Roberts topping the bill.

Originally from Preston, his poetry has won him the Whitbread Poetry Award, and he’s been shortlisted for the Griffin International Poetry Prize, the Forward Prize, and twice for the T.S. Eliot Prize.

His continuing collaboration with composer James MacMillan has led to two BBC Proms choral commissions, song cycles, music theatre works and an opera for the Welsh National Opera - The Sacrifice, which won the RPS Award for opera, and has just been released on CD.

His broadcast work includes A Fearful Symmetry for Radio 4, which landed the Sandford St Martin Prize, and Last Words commissioned by Radio 4 to mark the first anniversary of 9/11.

Michael has also penned two novels, and teaches at the Manchester Metropolitan University Writing School.

In the music slot on Saturday, February 13 (7.30pm), PP welcomes Alan Franks back to the fold.

Alan is an award-winning author, musician and journalist with many plays, records and poems under his creative belt.

His songs are witty, literate, and varied in mood from humorous to angry to tender.

Alongside singer Patty Vetta he has made many appearances at clubs, festivals and on radio. The first of their albums, Will was named by Time Out as one of the top Roots albums of 1995. In fact, one of the songs, Wishfulness Waltz, became the title track of a collection by the legends of folk-rock Fairport Convention.

Alan is collaborating as a lyricist with the saxophonist and composer Tim Whitehead, artist-in-residence at Tate Britain, and his new collection of short novels, Going Over, has been published by Muswell Press.

Last, but not least, Alan’s also working on a fifth album with Patty.

As usual on PP nights, MC will be Ross Baxter and there’ll be additional poetry from The Committee.

Lanternhouse has no bar so those attending are asked to take along their own pints!
