RICHARD Howarth has been named as the Westmorland Orchestra’s new principal conductor and will be on the podium for the popular ensemble’s 2010/2011 season, which starts in December.
He takes over from Barry Sharkey, who retired in 2009 after being the WO’s conductor for 35 years.
Richard has enjoyed a distinguished career as a violinist, leading and directing orchestra for more than 25 years and is best-known as leader of the Manchester Camerata.
An accomplished string player, the Manchester-based musician has also wielded the baton for the Ulster Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and is a regular guest conductor of Chester Philharmonic Orchestra, Blackburn Symphony Orchestra and coaches the Huddersfield Philharmonic and Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestras.
His appointment was announced at the WO’s lakes leisure Kendal concert last Saturday, for which Richard was guest conductor.
