A RECORD number of entires in the Industrial Tent helped ensure there was plenty to do and see at this year’s Fellside Royal Dufton Show and Sheepdog Trails - despite the poor weather.
There were heavy rain showers on the day but they did not seem to spoil the fun for competitors, exhibitors and visitors.
President of Dufton Show Don Shepherd, who has been a show committee member for 41 years, was pleased with the entries for this year’s show.
Mr Shepherd said: “As always the entries in the industrial tent have been of a very high standard, some of the best exhibits this year from across the county. And there have been a good number of exhibits here and also in the sheep classes which have been very strong this year.
“There have also been a lot of entries in the horse classes.
“It’s a shame about the rain, but we were fortunate to have dry, sunny spells, and it didn’t put people off coming to the show. All in all it has been a good show.”
The Champion Commercial Cattle was an 11-month-old British Blue Heifer being show for the first time by owner Neil Slack of Plumb Tree, Newby. The heifer was breed by Dorne (CORR) and John Richardson of Dufton.
Roselind Hullock took the cup for most points in floral art. Mrs Hullock of Keisley, Dufton, started her flower arrangements at 1pm the previous day and worked until 10pm to have all her entries ready.
Mrs Hullock said: “Most of the flowers I used were from my own garden. “The most difficult part is getting the arrangements from home to the show field in the car without damaging them.”
Sisters Emily and Georgia Lowes and their cousin, Ava Lodge, won the cups in the children’s classes. Emily, 13, and her friend Sophie Walker, 13, shared the J&J Cannon Cup for Exhibitor with most points in classes for 11-15 year old. Georgia, 10, won the J Elliott Shield for exhibitor with the most points in the classes aged 8-10 and their cousin Ava Lodge, four, won the Perpetual Trophy for the exhibitor under five years old with the most points.
Despite a broken arm, five-year old Sian Kipling, of Tebay, took first prize in the children’s fancy dress, which was held in a rain storm.
The show is a popular event for local charities to raise their profile and funds. Appleby Rotary Club organised a balloon race as part of its fundraising for the first Christmas visits for older people in the Appleby area.
Following the success of a similar scheme in Kirkby Stephen, Appleby Rotary is aiming to raise £500 to buy hampers for senior citizens in the area.
Air Ambulance received a cheque for £2,500 from Appleby Rotary Club and was also given donations collected throughout the year by a number of individuals.
Volunteer Fundraiser Jan Hawkins said: “It is very important for us to attend shows like Dufton. People who have been collecting for the Air Ambulance over the past year come and bring the money in and it is also reminding people we are here.
“Within the first 20 minutes of arriving more than five people came up to say they, a friend or family member had been helped by the air ambulance over the past 12 months. That’s a lot of people from just this area.
“And they all say they hope they don’t need to use us but are glad to know we are here.”
There were highest numbers of commercial stands at the show.
