John Ruskin School students team up with The Kinks' Ray Davies

SIX talented students from John Ruskin School share the spotlight in Ray Davies’ Child’s Play at Coniston Institute on Friday, December 16 (8pm).

The Kinks front man’s play was premiered at the Royal Festival Hall in September as part of the finale of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Festival of Britain.

A Grizedale Arts project, deputy director Alistair Hudson said Child’s Play formed part of a larger body of work by Grizedale Arts to synthesise art and education in a more complex and meaningful way.

That final comment sounds very pretentious and what does 'complex and meaningful' tell us? I heard Ray Davies speaking about this show on Radio 4 this morning. He says it's a juke-box musical similar to the ones using Abba songs or Queen songs. He could have taken more money and acclaim by putting it on in London with a professional cast but he says the Kinks got their start in music by performing in church halls, so a church hall is the right place to put on the show. 'Joseph' began as a school show, so maybe something big has started in Coniston. Coniston means 'King's town' - maybe Kinks' town in future.
