Halle Concert
THREE colourful works - Britten’s ‘Suite on English Folk Songs Op. 90’, Sibelius’s ‘Violin Concerto’ and Stravinsky’s ‘Petrushka’ – provided the Halle with a myriad of opportunities for displaying its superb artistry.
Andrew Gourlay, its controlling maestro, guided his charges through performances that were, in equal measure, exhilarating and seductive. The orchestra’s ability to explore in depth the central core of each piece was constantly on view.
Close attention to rhythmic crispness and precision, dynamic contrasts, tonal and textural variations, plus an input of extraordinary musicianship and technical dexterity from the principals, ensured that the masterpieces of Britten and Stravinsky were thrillingly brought to life.
‘Beautiful’ is the predominant word to be used when describing the performance of the Concerto.
However demanding Sibelius is (and he is ferociously so at times) Henning Kraggerud – with a lush, romantic intensity of tone, awesome technique, security of intonation and matching musicianship – infused every bar with meaningful beauty.
His orchestral partners, with Andrew Gourlay always in command, responded with equal mastery. Brian Paynes
