REHEARSALS are in full swing for Grange and District Amateur Operatic Society’s own take on a Lionel Bart classic.

Directed by Christine Bell, The Victoria Hall in Grange-over-Sands will transform into World War II London as the group take on the musical ‘Blitz.’

The iconic musical is set in 1940 when the East End of London is taking a terrible pounding from Hitler’s bombs.

The main protagonist is Mrs Blitztein, a domineering widow, played by Jean Malkin. She has bought up her large family by selling pickled herrings in Petticoat Lane.

Her family includes her petty-criminal son Harry (played by Tom Beck) and her beautiful daughter Carol (Olivia Muir).

Taking on the role of Alfred Locke, a ‘caustic cockney,’ Mrs Blitztein’s mentor, is Mick Malkin.

They all fight their own particular battles with neighbours and authorities alike, through many situations, many humorous, some tragic, and eventually find their own individual peace.

Opening night is Tuesday February 25 and runs nightly to March 1, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
