WIDELY respected artist Alan Stones stages his Nature…and Man exhibition at Brantwood.

Alan studied fine art at London’s St Martin’s School of Art before becoming a self-employed artist in 1971. After a decade based in Norfolk he moved, in 1982, to Cumbria and has worked as a painter and printmaker from his studio in the hamlet of Blencarn, east of Penrith, ever since. He has exhibited in venues across the country, including several in London and Germany.

Alan is perhaps best known for his many editions of lithographs, which in the 1980s looked at Cumbrian hill farming. From the mid-1990s, after his three-month residency on the Falkland Islands, Alan’s prints became much more minimal with their pared down imagery incorporating figures, birds or trees. The success of these prints has helped fund Alan’s work as a painter and his exhibition at Brantwood’s Severn Studio focuses entirely on his paintings.

The Coniston show is Alan’s first solo exhibition of oil paintings in Cumbria for nearly 20 years.

Severn Studio is open daily from 10.30am-5pm.
