C-ART’s visual extravaganza runs from Saturday until September 28 with 200 artists, designers and independent galleries in the frame.

This year’s mammoth two-week event also includes artists taking their art practice outside of their studios into unusual and extraordinary locations.

Among those in C-Art’s Art in Extraordinary Places is Sprint Mill, near Kendal, owned by Edward Acland, where nine craftmakers and artists have joined forces to display their extraordinary creative wares in and among the unique setting of Sprint Mill itself.

Visitors can see the refreshing new work of all nine contributors, many of which have utilised the spirit and artefacts arising from the mill’s weird and wonderful paraphernalia.

Edward said that the three-floored building was steeped in the nostalgia of past lives and forgotten crafts which the creative contributors were helping to bring back to life.

He added: “I hope this will contribute to maintaining the magic and positive link with the way of life of recent years.”

Sprint Mill is open daily 11am-4.30pm, with a programme of craft and art demonstrations, a willow walk, evenings of words and music, a children’s treasure hunt, and a ‘cagmagery’ workshop to bring, share and celebrate the mill’s collections of assorted bits and pieces that Edward can’t bear to throw out.

Highlights include magical and fantastical work of Monica Metsers and Graham Watson, a new collection of photographs from Florence Acland, and award-winning Eva Ullrich’s landscape paintings, from the Royal Scottish Gallery in Ediburgh where the gifted young artist’s work is currently on display.

As well as Sprint Mill, C-Art - which is put together by Eden Arts to promote and celebrate Cumbria’s rich creative talent - is working alongside the National Trust and key cultural destinations to promote art within beautiful heritage settings such as Lowther Castle, Florence Mine, Sizergh, The Bowder Stone, Acorn Bank, and Fell Foot Park.

Also included in C-Art (venue 87) is the Silverdale and Arnside Art and Craft Trail artist collective (SAACT) with a Pop Up Gallery at Leeds Children’s Holiday Centre, Silverdale.

Elsewhere, C-Art at Rheged features a ‘pocket’ size exhibition and sculpture trail, which will transform Rheged into a public art space, with sculpture and installations taking over the halls, cafes and corridors of the centre.
