ANNIE Coxey's first solo exhibition is vibrant feast of abstract paintings.

Entitled Slipping and Glimpsing, the work is on show until July 11 in the downstairs gallery at Kendal Museum - a great new exhibition space following last year's refurbishment.

"My paintings are mixed media and I am constantly balancing the 'happy accidents' within my paintings and then controlling the images I make," explains Annie, who trained at Cheltenham School of Art ten years ago and these days works as an art technician at Kendal College's Allen Building. She also has a studio among the many creative spaces at Factory off Kendal's Aynam Road and is a member of eminent Green Door Artists group.

"Much of my work is influenced by the landscapes around me and my interests in texture, layers, maps and networks," continues Annie.

"The title of the exhibition - Slipping and Glimpsing - is from a quote by Willem de Kooning about how it feels to to be in a creative place when painting and not sure of the outcome."

Annie says that the body of work for the exhibition has developed from her interest in a balance between letting the materials produce magic moments within the painting and then taking control: "The work pushes the materials and challenges me to take uncomfortable risks throughout the development of the painting. I do not know how the painting will develop and have to trust the process and make mistakes throughout the making.

"I work with collage, stitch, mark making, acrylics, resin and oil bars and am interested in layers, colour, mark - making and texture.

"Some paintings take months to resolve and go through a rollercoaster ride of various stages where they are disliked before something ‘clicks’ and they come out the other side.”

Kendal Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm.
