ANOTHER art exhibition well worth viewing is Stefan Orlowski's Fire and Firmament: New British Landscape, which is running at the Brewery Arts Centre.

On show in the Kendal art centre's Sugar Store Gallery until August 21, Ulverston-based Stefan's seductive pieces of art have your mind scrambling to unravel the mystery and solve the princely puzzle the paintings pose.

Stefan is definitely one of the region's rising stars of visual art with striking works that combine the pastoral with something rather more unsettling and darker.

As well as immersing his talents in the world of figuration and portraiture, his latest offerings reflect his ongoing exploration into the Lake District landscape, with a large scale show consisting of oil paintings, mixed media pieces, watercolour and prints.

The Brewery exhibition sees Stefan showcase a recent body of paintings and works on paper that focus on the interior landscape and peripheral coastal lines that surround him. Narrative passages of interest occur throughout his bucolic settings, stemming at times from strange occurrences and local histories. Running through his art is an ongoing fascination with atmosphere, weather and its ability to transform the physical environments that's all around us. Expect to feast your eyes on a compelling collection of traditional and experimental techniques that according to Stefan attempt to offer lines of connection to the history of oil painting while offering a fresh, contemporary aesthetic.

Bordering on the fantastic, his bold paintings are underpinned with a palpable tension.
