A DRAMATIC light installation created by artist Charles Monkhouse will be illuminating the landscape around some of the region's stunning lakes.

Under the Lakes Ignite 2016 banner and inspired by the poets and artists of the Lake District - in particular JMW Turner’s famous oil painting Buttermere Lake, with Part of Cromackwater, Cumberland, a Shower - Seven Nocturnal Rainbows visits three lakes in turn - Coniston Water, Ullswater and Grasmere; Coniston is first on Saturday, April 30, Sunday, May 1 and Bank Holiday Monday, May 2.

The electronic rainbows will appear as the light fades each evening and will become stronger as night takes over from day. Each rainbow consist of up to 250 floating LED units creating a gigantic spectrum as they travel across the lakes. The exact motion of the lights will depend on the wind, and will last two-three hours. The Coniston viewpoint will be from Brantwood’s meadow with parking at Brantwood and Machell’s Coppice. Viewing starts from 8.45pm depending on sunset and weather.

Elsewhere, Glencoyne Bay footpath/road is the viewpoint for the Ullswater showing on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 3-4, with the highly innovative creation heading for Grasmere on Thursday and Friday, May 5-6; the viewpoint there will be near the Daffodil Hotel and A591footpath.
