TEXTILE artist Jan Hicks has been selected as one of the best new arts graduates in the country and will be exhibiting her weaving and embroidery work at the Business Design Centre in London next week (July 9-12).
The popular New Designers show has been bringing together the best of UK graduate design work for the past 24 years.
“People tend to think of it as ‘young designers’ because it is all work by recent graduates,” explained Jan, “but you don’t have to be in your 20s to be a new graduate and I am one of several more mature students exhibiting this year.”
Orton-based Jan completed her BA (Hons) in Contemporary Applied Arts at the University of Cumbria in June, specialising in weaving and constructed textiles and her work has already been exhibited at venues such as Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre and Sedbergh’s Farfield Mill Arts Heritage Centre.
She is also a part-time farmer with a flock of rare breed sheep and angora goats from which she produces hand dyed yarn and socks.
