MAKERS of a famous Cumbrian dessert are preparing to dedicate a day to the popular sweet treat of 25 years.

The family at Cartmel Village Shop this month are holding a Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Day in honour of their indulgent product.

Having baked their way through quarter of a century, the Johns are marking the anniversary year by giving something back to their sticky toffee fans.

At the end of this month the team will set up outside the Cartmel store and give away free 'hot to go' sticky toffee puddings to the first 500 visitors who wish them a Happy Birthday.

The event will take place on Halloween (October 31).

"The team will be there from 11am, so don’t miss out," said a Cartmel Sticky spokesperson. "There are no Halloween tricks, just treats, and surely there’s no better day to eat a sticky toffee treat than Halloween!"

From humble beginnings in the back of the village post office, where founders Jean and Howard Johns first made and sold their first take-home dessert, the company now sells one million puds a year.

"Demanded by jockeys at the end of Cartmel’s famous horse races, shipped to Dubai for the expats to savour, raved about by national radio DJs and loved by celebrity chefs - this pud has certainly earned its status," they added. "The soft, moist, date filled sponges are smothered with sweet sticky toffee sauce - simple and a classic.

"Add a dollop of clotted cream or drizzle with custard and devour."
