KENDAL is not short of decent eateries, but in the current economic climate the cost can put a dampener on an evening out.

So it was with great delight that my fiance and I discovered the three-course menu at the Carus Green Golf Club, which is priced at just £9.95 per person.

The ‘winter warmer’ menu – which can also be reduced to two courses for just £7.95 – offers a range of dishes to suit all tastes including vegetarian, and is served on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

Reasonably-priced meals can also be ordered off the main menu, but we plumped for the three course deal and my partner began with prawn cocktail, which he said tasted lovely and fresh.

He followed it with pork in orange and ginger sauce, with leek mash and vegetables.

He admitted he had been a little apprehensive about the pork as he is quite particular about it, but said it was delicious and the sauce complemented it perfectly.

He ended his meal with a hot, gooey sticky toffee pudding.

I enjoyed a starter of garlic mushrooms with smoked bacon and red wine sauce, followed by a 6oz steak in Diane sauce which came piled high with chunky chips, onion rings, mushrooms and peas.

The steak was cooked exactly how I had asked and the chips were perfect indulgence.

A thick and creamy lemon and ginger cheesecake rounded the meal off perfectly.

The waiting staff were friendly and efficient, despite how busy the restaurant seemed, and the food came quickly and cooked beautifully.

The restaurant itself, part of the new multi-million pound clubhouse, feels comfortable yet stylish, and there is also a well-stocked bar to unwind in before or after a meal.

Neither of us could find fault with anything and could not believe what good value the menu offers. We have since vowed to return with friends.

We made our way home with smiles and our stomachs full.
