Or it could be in the tasting as the Cumbrian committee of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution launch a collection of tried and tested family favourite recipes.

The book is a mix of sweets and savouries and secret ingredients with ideas ranging from leg of Herdwick lamb in hay and pigeon and Guinness casserole to foolproof pavlova and elderflower champagne.

The idea of the cookery book came about as an alternative fundraising method for the charity that has paid out over £100,000 in the last 12 months to 80 farming families in Cumbria, the highest rate of any other county in England. Regional Officer Georgina Lamb commented: "It is clear that the Cumbrian hill farming families have suffered again and the R.A.B.I's resources have been stretched. However, the cookery book is a great way of raising funds and filling tummies at the same time! Everyone wins!"

The aptly name "Proof is in the Pudding" will be launched at an event on Wednesday, May 28, from 7.30pm at Penrith Rugby Club with sampling sessions and demonstrations for all.

Tickets are £6 each including complementary glass of wine.

The cookery book will be on sale on the night priced at £7.50 or it can be ordered from R.A.B.I, 25 Walverden Road, Briercliffe, Burnley, Lancashire, BB10 3QP again priced at £7.50 plus £1.50 p&p.

Please make cheques for £9 payable to R.A.B.I.
