CAROL Ann Duffy calls him ‘the patron saint of poetry’ and his hypnotic tones as presenter of the popular Radio 4 Poetry Please show have made him one of Britain's favourite poetic voices.

Who is it? - Roger McGough, mighty master of poetry and prose, out and about once again and playing Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake on Thursday, April 25 (7.30pm).

His highly recommend autobiography Said And Done gives a great insight into his wonderfully expressive career and Roger's The Way Things Are (1999) is one of the most cleverly constructed pieces of verse in the contemporary canon.

In addition to his mantle as one of the Liverpool Poets, he was a member of The Scaffold during the 1960s and early 70s and has gone on to become a twice BAFTA-winning broadcaster and bestselling author, who was made a Freeman of the City of Liverpool in 2001 and received a CBE in 2004 for his services to literature.

A new book of poems by Mr McGough is always an event and As Far As I Know (Penguin) is truly a cause for celebration.

He is a poet of many voices.

In his latest musings menace and melancholy there may be, but there’s plenty of Roger’s characteristic wit and wordplay too.
