THE UNOBTAINABLE - A STORY OF BLUE by David de Lara, £55
IN 1964, Donald Campbell famously set new world land and water speed records.
In her foreword to this sumptuously illustrated book, his daughter Gina says she does not believe such a ‘double’ will ever be matched: “So in my book he was and still is the greatest and what’s more and importantly he was my Daddy.”
David de Lara’s book also celebrates the achievements of Donald’s father, Sir Malcolm, who 75 years ago set his own world water speed record on Coniston Water. Presented in an album style, it is a joy to look at thanks to evocative black-and-white images from the time.
However, the book is described as mere packaging for the accompanying DVD, Remembering Donald – a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the speed legend’s life.
Available from the Ruskin Museum, Coniston.
