PHOTOGRAPHING THE LAKE DISTRICT by Stuart Holmes, £25

IF THERE'S ever going to be a bible for landscape photographers in the Lake District, then this could well be it.

Whether you're a beginner, gifted amateur or an expert, this comprehensive guide will surely have something to offer.

It contains a wealth of information, including the Lake District weather, sunrise and sunset times, dozens of prime locations from which to take some of the best scenic shots and even tips on the best way to get around the national park.

The book is replete with more than 350 photographs taken by Stuart Holmes and his photographer and rock climber friend Michael Ryan. These inspirational examples are accompanied by technical information about how each of the pictures was taken.

This is the first of a planned series of 10 photographic guides, with others in the pipeline featuring shooting locations ranging from the Peak District to London.

But not every photograph Mr Holmes takes can easily be reproduced. Often he takes to the air in a paraglider to capture scenes, which most photographers will not be able emulate.

Nonetheless, there are still plenty of wonderful images that can be taken with feet firmly planted on terra firma.
