ARNSIDE trio Gritty Britain are hoping tomorrow’s Friday 13 will be a lucky one with the release of their new single.

‘Weekend Millionaire’, according to bassist Colin Salter, is about, “getting paid on Friday, and for those two days you’re king of the world.

“Your pockets are full of cash, you’re splashing it around and then when it comes to Sunday you’re hungover, worse for wear and skint again.”

An experience that many people will sympathise with, and as Colin explained, “All our songs are about things that people can relate to – they’re not about pimps and guns, they’re proper songs about proper people.”

Gritty Britain – made up of Colin, singer and guitarist Thom Heywood and drummer Andrew Slater – have been working hard over the past two years building a healthy local following with regular gigs at Ye Olde John O'Gaunt, The Robert Gillow and The Lord Ashton, plue Ye Olde Fighting Cocks.

They have gained a reputation for their funny, provocative lyrics – with previous tracks including ‘Beer Goggle Eyes’ and ‘Swingers’ Paradise’ - and have even come up with a new genre to describe themselves: alco-pop.

They describe it as, “Risqué social commentary on contemporary society, from diverse and individual perspectives, delivered with panache and flair, in Cumbrian dialect, by experienced local musicians.”

It also comes with a warning: “Flagrant use of stereotypes: Not for the faint-hearted or the squeamish feminist. Sense of humour essential.”

‘Weekend Millionaire’ sees the band targeting a much wider audience with a new music video launching on YouTube.

Shot on location at the Sun Inn, Ulverston this summer, the video was filmed by talented local producer and director Ben Warburton.

Songwriter and frontman Thom Heywood said: “We were delighted when Ben agreed to make this for us.

“Everyone turned up. We had a fabulous day filming and the results are
fantastic. I just hope everyone likes it as much as we do."

As well as on the web, the band can be seen playing live at local gigs including Moonfest this weekend and Kendal Calling in August.

‘Weekend Millionaire’ is available to view on YouTube from tomorrow and to download from iTunes on August 4.
