WESTMORLAND Youth Orchestra musical director Roland Fudge shares the podium for the ensemble’s next musical outing.

A concert of contrasting moods at Kendal Parish Church, on Saturday, June 28 (7.30pm), Roland conducts Tchaikovsky’s stunning Pathetique Symphony masterpiece before handing over to burgeoning batoneers and youth orchestra members, Josh Ayrton and David McGregor.

Former Lakes School student, trumpeter Josh from Windermere will conduct Solace and The Ragtime Dance by Scott Joplin, which show the introvert and the extrovert side of the popular and highly influential black American composer.

David, of Grange-over-Sands, will conduct his own rousingly characterful composition Waltz.

As well as clarinettist, composer and conductor, the Kirkby Lonsdale, Queen Elizabeth School student, is also a saxophone player.

Also the programme, WYO’s Mary Ormerod takes the solo spotlight on double bass for contemporary English composer Bryan Kelly's Caliban and Ariel (arranged for orchestra by Roland), which display two very different characters from Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Viola player Iori Hicks swaps instruments to become violin soloist in Massenet's hugely popular Meditation, in which the mood switches between ethereal peace and emotional turbulence.

And in the lively first movement from JS Bach's famous Concerto for Two Violins, the popular youth ensemble’s Holly Chalcraft and Freya Rock (leader and deputy) will direct, and play the solo parts.

To kick off what promises to be another splendid evening of music-making, Stella Foxcroft’s ever-expanding WYO Brass provides welcoming music at 7pm.
