FOLK music legend Eliza Carthy is to headline a celebration concert at Windermere this summer.

She will perform at the Lakes School on July 24 to mark the end of a three-year project by environmental campaigners, Windermere Reflections.

Eliza is the daughter of Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy who spearheaded the traditional folk music revival in Britain with their band, the Watersons.

She formed her own first group, the Waterdaughters at the age of 13, which included her mother and her aunt Lal Waterson.

She has twice been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for UK album of the year, in 1998 for ‘Red Rice’, and again in 2003 for ‘Anglicana’.

In 2003 Carthy swept the boards at the Radio 2 Folk Awards, winning Folk Singer of the Year, Best Album (for ‘Anglicana’) and Best Traditional Track (for ‘Worcester City’).

In 2010, Carthy released an album of collaborations with her mother, ‘Gift’, the gift in question being the handing of talent from generation to generation.

Windermere Reflections’ programme manager Liz Davey said: “We are really excited that Eliza Carthy is coming to the area and helping us celebrate the end of our programme in style.”
