CHART-TOPPING band British Sea Power are coming home to Kendal with a typically special show this November.

The indie rock six-piece, three of whom hail from the Auld Grey Town, will be performing their favourite songs from the past ten years in collaboration with Ulverston Brass Band as part of a national tour.

This project has been two years in the making and is the first time British Sea Power have entered a music collaboration with another performing group.

“We were offered a commission to do some kind of performance in an art space called the chocolate factory in Derby,” explained singer/guitarist Jan Wilkinson.

“Ideally there would be a reference to local culture and or history.

“Quite a while later after a whisky on a Scottish plane I had a funny dream about a giant trumpet chasing me.
“I immediately put two and two together and we have a cornet player so the idea wasn’t entirely foreign.”

On choosing what tracks to perform as part of the set, Jan said, “I picked songs that were generally not too loud as brass bands find it hard to play against a lot of noise.

“Also I took the opportunity to do some songs which don’t often get the chance to be played much.”

“It’s nice to remember about the songs which once on an album are kind of forgotten because they’re competing against favourites and singles in the set for a place.

“It can be surprising, as it’s possibly to literally forget what a song goes like.”

British Sea Power have released seven albums since 2003 and are currently the longest-serving band/artist signed to Rough Trade Records.

Their track 'Remember Me' was voted number 9 in the most important hundred tracks of BBC6 Music’s lifetime by the station’s listeners and they have enjoyed musical endorsements from the likes of David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker and Radiohead.

BSP have also become known for their sensitive film scorings, including the recent ‘From the Sea to the Land Beyond’ which has now been released as their seventh LP.

Tickets for the show on November 8 are available through the Brewery Arts Centre, who have booked the event, but the venue has yet to be announced.
