ONE of the biggest names in the wonderful world of woodwind is heading our way next week.

Wissam Boustany takes centre stage for Suzanne de Lozey's Flute Day, this year held at Kendal Town Hall on Sunday, February 22.

Running from 9.30am-5pm, Wissam will be joined by two other highly respected flautists, husband and wife team, Gareth McLearnon and Abbie Burrows, who will provide classes for students from young beginners (first access level) to diploma level adults.

Wissam was born in Lebanon and his experiences of the war there have greatly influenced his outlook on both life and music. He currently teaches at the Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music and gives masterclasses in many other conservatoires in the UK and abroad.

He is well-known to Lakeland audiences as a performer who inspires his listeners with his energetic and communicative music-making.

Gareth was born in Belfast and has a varied performing career from solo concerto appearances to playing regularly in the pit orchestras of London’s West End.

He has led masterclasses and education events for young flute players both as a featured artist in his own right, and through his work with the children's flute playing charity, Flutewise.

Abbie also enjoys a very varied music career: teaching privately and on courses, running outreach projects, freelancing in London orchestras and playing in various chamber groups.

When not playing the flute, Abbie is a keen writer and is working on a set of children's picture books about music.

The Kendal day of music has been put together by one of the region's best known flautists, Suzanne de Lozey and her Flutes and Co players, assisted by Sarah Barkway.

Those attending can take part in fun workshops with Gareth, learn how to Beatbox with Abbie and play in a masterclass with Wissam, although the session with Wissam is for advanced students only.

The public are welcome to watch Wissam in action during his sessions, which start at 10.45pm and run throughout the day. He will be accompanied by Brenda Blewett on piano.

There will be plenty of flute related accessories from Jonathan Myall Music, the opportunity to chat to flute repairer Arthur Haswell (and get your flute repaired) plus the chance to try out members of the flute family - piccolo, alto, bass and contra.

Additionally, there will be ensemble playing and finally the big one - the public concert at 3.45pm, where players of all standards can perform.
