RECORD collectors will have access to exclusive releases and rarities as Record Store Day 2016 makes its mark on Kendal this Saturday.

Replay Records, in the Westmorland shopping centre, will once again host a day likely to attract music enthusiasts seeking to bolster their collections as well as newcomers to independent music shops.

The annual celebration of independent record labels and shops has contributed significantly to the resurgence of vinyl; something instrumental in helping independents fight back against the impact of downloads and multinationals.

Philip Ames, who owns Replay, said: "It's a big day, it can triple our Saturday sales. There is always a big queue outside.

"Vinyl is coming back with a vengeance. It was never completely dead; it was always in the background but now it's becoming a major part of what we do.

"We make the shop look nice and we have things that we give away. Some shops put on live music on the day so we might try to do that."

Mr Ames has owned record shops for the past 50 years. He first started in Blackburn and went on to run another in Preston before moving his business to Kendal five years ago.

"We started getting involved with the vinyl revival about four years ago," he said. "I started out with vinyl in the 60s and 70s and now I'm back here again.

"You have the analogue enthusiasts who always want the warmer sound and you also have younger people getting interested. It's a nicer product; there's more of a physical connection. I can see why people like it."

Replay Records also benefits on days like RSD because of the fact that it is the only shop of its kind for a long way. Enthusiasts flock from all over Cumbria to get involved in the event.

"When the opportunity to come to Kendal came up it seemed like a good idea," said Mr Ames. "We are the only place left in about a 50 mile radius. It's been going very well so far. I have a great team here."

Record Store Day 2016 takes place on April 16.
